BIENVENIDOS A LA CLASE DE ESPAÑOL.

Photo by Bill Swanson - World Faces Photography, Peru 2007

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year. For many of you this is your first experience with a Spanish class. At Rosemount Middle School we feel that integrating Spanish into the curriculum is increasingly becoming a valuable tool in today s society. Spanish is being spoken in all parts of the world, including Minnesota. In addition to learning basic language skills, we also hope to enrich the students appreciation of other cultures.

This should be a very exciting year for all of us at RMS as the enrollment in our Spanish classes continues to grow and we welcome Ms. Carrier, who will be teaching one of our Spanish 1B classes.  Specific information for her 5-Gold class can be found on her Moodle Page at Sylvie Carrier.

We are also continuing with Spanish 1A for our sixth grade students who were enrolled in Spanish at Diamond Path Elementary DP from kindergarten through 5th grade.  They will be using a textbook for the first time and will be in classes with our seventh graders.  Last year s sixth graders from Diamond Path are now continuing with Spanish 1B and they have been placed in classes with our eighth graders.  Also, this is the third year that our eighth grade Diamond Path students will be taking Spanish 2 at Rosemount High School.  Therefore I, Mrs. Swanson, will be teaching 1 section of combined 6th grade and 7th grade Spanish 1A, 5 sections of 7th grade Spanish 1A, 2 sections of combined 7th grade and 8th grade Spanish 1B, and 2 sections of 8th grade Spanish 1B for a total of 365 students enrolled in Spanish classes at Rosemount Middle School.  All classes will be 53 - 55 minutes each every-other-day with the six period day schedule.

I hope that this will be a fun and enjoyable experience for you as well as your son or daughter. Please be willing to help them memorize vocabulary words. Remember that laughter is one of the best teachers and they will remember your attempts at the new Spanish words.

I look forward to working with you and your child this year. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at lisa.swanson district196.org.

CURRICULUM/HOMEWORK

District 196 uses the 2007 textbook series Avancemos by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Students will receive both a textbook and a workbook to use in school and at home. In Spanish 6, 7 and 8, students will be learning the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. These skills will be developed through classroom lessons and activities as well as practice time at home. Most of the class time will be spent on oral practice with some writing. Therefore, we encourage students to continue reviewing skills at home each night for a 15-minute practice session. This is particularly important with our every-other-day class set up. Students should do homework on the day they had class and then practice the next night. PRACTICE TIME IS ESSENTIAL. Students should have some type of SPANISH HOMEWORK EVERY NIGHT. We have found that daily short periods of study and memorizing are more effective than one long cramming session.

HOW TO GET THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS

Please see the Homework Assignments section below and click on the file of lesson plans and homework assignments for the correct grade level. Remember Spanish 1A is for the seventh graders and sixth grade DP students.  Spanish 1B is for the eighth graders and seventh grade DP students.  The assignments are listed for the week and are always due the next time the class meets unless specified otherwise.

ASSIGNMENTS/LATE OR MISSING WORK

Students will have until the class day before the unit test to hand in missing assignments or late work. Late work receives partial credit. Items not turned in receive a missing M score. Please check out SCHOOLVIEW for current grades.

GRADES/EVALUATION

Students will be evaluated on workbook assignments, book assignments, projects, quizzes, unit tests, and participation. Spanish 1A students will begin with a preliminary/review lesson and then units 1- 3, approximately.   Upon successful completion B- or better  of seventh grade Spanish, your child will continue in Spanish 1B. Spanish 1A and 1B put together count as one year of language study. Upon successful completion of Spanish 1B, Diamond Path current seventh grade Spanish students will be placed in Spanish 2 in eighth grade at Rosemount High School.

Spanish 1B will include a brief review of last year s material and then units 3-6. Spanish 1B students must maintain at least a B- average in order to register for Spanish 2 at the high school.

TEXTBOOKS/DICTIONARIES

Students will use the textbook Avancemos 1a in 6th and 7th grade and the entire Avancemos book in 8th grade. Avancemos is the same textbook used for Spanish 1 at the high school. Each student will also use a soft cover grammar and vocabulary workbook. Both books must be in class daily. These materials are the student s responsibility and should be treated with care. If necessary, fines will be assessed for damaged textbooks and lost workbooks. Students are not required to have a Spanish-English dictionary. All of their vocabulary words can be found in the back of their textbook and workbook.

Please see the information below for using the textbook online.

EXTRA PRACTICE

Students can also practice on the different websites and practice LINKS we have listed. Students will also have access to the online version of their textbooks. The codes and directions for this will be given to the students.

EXTRA CREDIT - QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Each week there will be an extra credit question on this site. To receive 1 point of extra credit, email the answer to my mailbox by Sunday of that week. Be sure to include your NAME and HOUR in your email. THESE POINTS WILL BE ADDED TOGETHER AND PUT ON SCHOOLVIEW AT THE END OF EACH TRIMESTER.

EXTRA CREDIT - FLASHCARDS

Students are encouraged to do the flashcards for each unit and turn them in on the day of the unit test.  They will be given in class the list of words and a bag to keep them in securely.  They need to cut them apart, write the English translation on the back side, and practice them for at least 15 minutes each night.  They will also be told when to bring them to class for game days.  THE POINTS WILL BE ADDED TOGETHER AND PUT ON SCHOOLVIEW AT THE END OF EACH UNIT. These are the current flashcard requirements:

SEVENTH GRADERS and DP SIXTH GRADERS should do all of the words on page 55.

EIGHTH GRADERS and DP SEVENTH GRADERS should do all of the words on page 213.
